How old are you, anyway?
When you look in the mirror, does that person looking back at you match the age you feel like in your head? And would you act differently if you didn’t know how old you really were?
When we are children, and told to “act our age”, it means “grow up and act older” but when we are older and told to “act our age”, it means “don’t be childish”. Hmmm…exactly who are these official finger wagging age police?
Bill: I remember my parents and schoolteachers telling me, “Act your age.” Did they mean chronologically, physically, intellectually, socially or in dog years? Sometimes when I first meet people, they ask me where I grew up. I almost always tell them it’s hard to answer, since I haven’t done that yet. .
Sheri: I have to say I have not yet reconciled myself to believe my actual calendar age – yikes? How did that happen???? I am grateful to all the family and friends and life experiences along the way that do attest to my age. But in my head, I still see myself as a younger person. Keeping a positive attitude also helps me feel younger.
So why not combine the “spirit of youth” with the “wisdom of years:” dance on tables,
shoot out the lights, kiss all the cowboys and start lots of fights. Then put on your three
piece big boy suit and read the Wall Street Journal, ponder the creation of the pyramids,
be kind to animals, give to your local food pantry and connect with friends. Then you’ll
have mischief, audacity and quiet respect stuffed into one package loaded with more
good life lessons and stories to tell.
