“The achievement of one goal should be the starting point of another.” (Alexander Graham Bell)
So, what’s next for you? Achieving a goal can feel fantastic, as it’s the result of hard work, dedication, and determination. But once you reach that milestone, a new question often arises: What's next?
Setting goals gives us direction and purpose, much like GPS (except when you don’t follow through, there is no automated voice guiding you how to reroute your path. 😊) Reaching a goal doesn’t mean the end of the road; it’s more like arriving at a rest stop. Grab a snack, refuel, and plot out your next destination!
Sheri: Let’s say you enter a 5K run. Completing the 5k can boost your confidence which can then inspire you to enter more 5K runs, or maybe even train for a marathon. Every small step allows you to venture out just a little bit further.
Bill: I use the SMART goal process when I set goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. So instead of just saying "I want to learn a new language," I say "I will learn conversational Spanish for 30 minutes each day over the next three months" Notice how the word “achievable” saves me from aiming to write poetry in fluent Spanish by next Tuesday. (And by the way, “¿Cómo estás?” I’m already nailing it.)
Think about your passions and interests when setting your next goal. What excites you, and what would make you jump out of bed—preferably without hitting snooze 14 times? Goals are all about stretching your boundaries and opening the door to new experiences. The world is like a buffet: it’s full of opportunities, so why not grab a plate and try something new?
So, what’s your next challenge? Whatever it is, embrace it with enthusiasm, a bit of humor, and maybe a celebratory cake on standby. Life’s too short to skip dessert…or your next big adventure!
