Connect the Dots

Life challenging questions show up early and often, without much warning. We’re expected to answer with confidence. Yet most days, we’re just staring at a page full of dots, pen hovering, thinking, Are these two dots supposed to connect to each other…or what???
Sheri: Life definitely has a very dry sense of humor. It rarely hands us the whole picture. We get hints, a nudge here, or a curveball there. Some dots are bold and obvious like birthdays, graduations and weddings. Others are faint, almost invisible at the time. You don’t know they matter until later, when you look back and think, Ah, that’s where that line (or at least those two dots) came from.
Bill: Sometimes the dots behave more like dominos. You line ‘em up as best you can with the information you have, knowing full well one good flick could change everything. You have a clever chat with a friend, a chance opportunity, or an ordinary Tuesday. Then tap: one domino tips another, and suddenly momentum shows up uninvited - surprise.
Life leans more toward improvisation than offering a tidy blueprint – more . connect-the-dots-in-the-world than paint-by-numbers. Clarity usually arrives afterwards, not before. No one gathers around a perfectly predictable life and says, “I knew it would happen that way.”
And of course, some dominos you try to connect fall sideways. We call that character development. 😊 Those crooked connections often become the most interesting parts of the picture. Eventually, a shape or pattern begins to appear. Familiar. Comforting. A little quirky. You recognize yourself in it - resilience, detours, and laughter earned the hard way.
So, keep going. Answer the questions as best you can today. Draw the next line. Set the next domino. You don’t have to see the whole picture to be part of making it. You’re not behind - you’re in the game.

Positive Reflections...
“Life is a journey, not a destination.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” Søren Kierkegaard
“Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.” Henry David Thoreau

Music Corner....
Somewhere along the way, popular music figured this out before most of us did. Long before we had the language for “pivoting” or “reinventing ourselves,” songs were already reminding us that timing is strange, clarity is overrated, and becoming is a process. From the 1960s to now, musicians have been quietly nodding to the same truth: you don’t get the full picture upfront. You move, you wait, you stumble, you listen—and only later do the lines start to make sense.
“Turn! Turn! Turn!” – The Byrds (1965)…Time, seasons, and the unfolding of meaning—this is very dots-connecting-in-hindsight energy.
“Vienna” – Billy Joel (1977) This song projects slowing down, not having it figured out yet, but being “in the game” rather than behind. Slow down, stop rushing, and stop burning out to achieve success, as life is a long journey. And no need to squeeze all accomplishments into early life; fulfilment and rest (represented by the city of Vienna) will be there whenever you arrive.
“Unwritten” – Natasha Bedingfield (2004)The future isn’t filled in yet; you’re still holding the pen and hovering over the dots.
