Pick Your Spot

Strolling along the Clearwater pier, we spotted a pelican perched on a pier post just offshore, looking back toward the beach. We named him Pete. While hundreds of people were parking their butts on the sandy beach, Pete chose a different spot all his own.
Remember Goldilocks? Not too hot; not too cold. Not too hard; not too soft. She found a spot that was just right.
Bill: You have to admire Pete’s decision-making. The beach was crowded, the buoy wasn't, and from where he was sitting, he had a pretty good view of everything. No fighting for a place in the sand, no searching for an empty chair, and no one asking him to move his umbrella. Found his spot and settled in.
Sheri: I think we spend a lot of time focusing on other folks' spots—what they're doing, where they're going, and what they have. Pete either didn't get that memo or he ignored it. He just found his own spot, and it worked just fine for him. He didn’t even budge when he found us watching him.
Our best spot may not look like someone else's. It might just be a favorite chair, a quiet morning walk, a kitchen where we love to cook, a porch where we watch the world go by, or simply time with people who make us feel at home. It just needs to work for us.
The beach was crowded. Pete’s spot was not. There’s a lesson in that. If a fish happens to swim by, enjoy your lunch.
