Piece of Cake

Sometimes, a “piece of cake” is just that simple: something easy, something sweet, a moment in life we can enjoy without hesitation. However, many times in life when we start something new, we’re more likely to describe the moment as a mountain rather than cake. And certainly not like the carefree moment this young one is having as he dives into his first birthday cake.
Unlike cakes, which are usually soft, sweet, and enjoyable, mountains can seem permanent, immovable, and a little intimidating. In fact, it’s easy to get in the habit of believing life is mostly mountains and very few cakes. Or worse, that if something feels difficult, it must not be “for us” so we avoid the hard stuff.
Sheri: It’s so easy to say “piece of cake” after I am done (and who doesn’t love those times when everything just flows from start to end!) But often at the beginning I hesitate until I can clearly see and trust that the outcome is achievable.
Bill: I like plans, maps, and at least one backup plan for the backup plan – preferably my cake at the same time…and afterwards too!
Life doesn’t usually come with a clear path. But when we do reach the end of a successful endeavor, we usually recognize it wasn’t nearly as impossible or daunting as it first appeared. And that becomes a very special moment we need more of - when we happily grin and say, “piece of cake!”
