Is the Juice Worth the Squeeze

Some things in life are worth the squeeze...take orange juice, for example. Other things just leave us with sticky hands.

We’ve all had an opportunity land in front of us and wondered, Is this worth it? Is the project worth the time? Is the trip worth the drive? Is one more committee worth another meeting?

Sheri: I don’t think everything worthwhile has to pay us back. Time with an old friend may not make us richer, but it can make us happier. Sometimes the payoff is simply that we did something we wanted to do, learned something new, or got to spend an afternoon with someone we love.

Bill: I agree. But before we squeeze twenty oranges, I’d still like to know if anybody wants juice.

Sometimes the answer is pretty simple. Other times, the payoff is harder to measure. Something may not fill the glass, but it can still offer enough possibility, purpose or enjoyment to make the effort worthwhile.

But sometimes we spend so much time calculating the risk that we forget there’s a risk of not trying, too. The conversation we keep putting off may never happen. The idea we keep shelving may gather dust. And “someday” can become a surprisingly permanent address.

Trying doesn’t mean it will work. Sometimes there isn’t much juice. But there might be a lesson. A memory. A new friend…or at least a pretty good story. 😊 Even an unsuccessful squeeze can teach us something—although we may not appreciate the lesson until a little time has passed.

Sometimes an orange is just better off in a fruit salad. We don’t need to squeeze every opportunity that rolls onto the counter.

But when something matters, it might be worth squeezing, getting a little messy and finding out.

Positive Reflections... Likeminded Perspectives

Every time man makes a new experiment he always learns more. He cannot learn less.” — R. Buckminster Fuller

Bill: FYI, R. Buckminster Fuller (1895–1983) was an American architect, designer, inventor, author, and futurist. He was best known for thinking about how we could solve big human problems through design, technology, and doing more with less.  Now that’s my kind of guy!
