Reading the Green

Picture a foursome on the green, huddled like a tiny board meeting in golf shoes. One player crouches over the ball, studying the slope with the intensity usually reserved for tax forms. The others gather behind him, heads tilted, eyes squinting, soaking up every clue the grass is willing to spill. They’re not being nosey. They’re being wise. Because in golf - just like in life - we get better when we pay attention to each other.
That moment is what we like to call “reading the green,” and it reaches way beyond the fairway. Every room we walk into has its own slope. Every conversation has a grain. People tilt one way or another depending on the kind of day they’re having. If we’re willing to pause and notice - even for a beat - we start seeing things we might’ve rushed right past.
Reading the green is part awareness, part humility, and part gentle curiosity. It asks you to pause for just a breath and notice what’s happening around you.
Sheri: Like checking out who is doing great, who is stressed, and who is silently signaling for help like a lighthouse with dim batteries. When you tune in, you begin to sense what’s needed. It may be a well-timed word, a quiet nod, a shift in tone, or simply getting out of the way so someone else can take their shot.
Bill: It can also mean learning from the putts that roll before yours - both the triumphs and the “well-that-went-sideways” moments. Someone else’s misread might save you from making the same oops. Someone else’s smooth roll might show you the perfect line. Borrow their wisdom. Applaud their bravery. Use their experience to refine your stroke when it’s your turn to step up.
At the end of the day, reading the green is really about connection. the kind that reminds us we were never meant to figure things out alone. We listen, we learn, we adjust. And the cup starts to feel a little closer.
When knowledge flows, positivity grows. It’s in the hole!

Positive Reflections.....
“Knowledge is the antidote to fear.”… Ralph Waldo Emerson
“It is not what you look at that matters, but what you see.” … Henry David Thoreau
“In union there is strength.” … Aesop

Music Corner....
Just like reading the green helps you understand the slope beneath your feet, music has a way of tuning our hearts to what’s happening around us. The right song can nudge us to pay attention, soften our pace, or see someone else a little more clearly, connect better and move forward together.
A feel-good song about choosing to really listen. to people, to life, to each other.
“You’ve Got a Friend” — Carole King (1971) / James Taylor version (1971) A song all about sensing when someone’s struggling, showing up, and being in tune with their emotional landscape - emotional “green reading.”
“Count on Me” — Bruno Mars (2010) Warm, upbeat, and all about being the person who notices when someone needs help and steps in. It reflects connection, presence, and reading each other well…more reading the green 😊
