What Counts

When we were kids, counting seemed pretty straightforward. One, two, three, four... we counted marbles, baseball cards, pennies in a jar, hot wheels, and the days until our birthday. Counting was simply a way to keep track of things we cared about. If you wanted to know how much you had, you counted.
But somewhere along the road of life, we learn that the most important things aren’t things at all. They are people. And while it’s nice to be able to count our friends, it’s even better to know we can count on them.
Sheri: When I think about the people who've shaped my life, I don't remember what they owned or accomplished nearly as much as I remember how dependable they were. Their presence became something I could count on, and that gave me confidence to face whatever came next.
Bill: I've noticed that the people who are there - who I can count on - never seem to make a big deal about it. They are there, kind of like the sunrise, only with better conversation.
Think about the people you've counted on through the years. Maybe it was a parent who always answered the phone. A spouse who stood beside you through good times and difficult ones. A friend who showed up when showing up wasn't convenient. A neighbor who quietly helped without being asked.
Dependability is one of life's most undervalued treasures. In a world filled with promises, dependable people become landmarks. They provide a sense of stability when circumstances shift beneath our feet. They remind us that trust isn't built through grand gestures but through small acts repeated consistently over time.
Maybe that's a worthwhile question for all of us: When the people in our lives start counting the people who truly matter, will they find us on their list?
The good news is that dependability doesn't require special talent, wealth, or status. It only requires intention coupled with consistent action.
After all, in the final tally of life, people may forget what we owned or achieved, but they rarely forget whether they could count on us. And that, perhaps, is really “what counts.”
