A Symphony of Thanks

Thanksgiving has a funny way of sneaking up on us. One day you’re looking for your flip-flops, and then all of a sudden you’re googling “how long does it take to thaw a turkey the size of a toddler?”
Here’s the thing: gratitude is a lot like harmony. It’s louder, sweeter, and lasts longer when we do it together.
For us, Thanksgiving isn’t just about turkey and the trimmings (though we are definitely partial to homemade pumpkin pie and apple crisp). It’s about the people gathered around the table. The mismatched stories, the awkward jokes, the unexpected tears, the cacophony of all the conversations…and the music of everyone being in the same room.
Bill: Football on Thanksgiving is good too – sort of like gravy: you don’t need it, but it sure makes the day better. When players huddle up, you’ll see the same thing you see at a family table: heads together, plans being made, maybe some finger-pointing, and finally someone saying, “Pass the ball!” or “Pass the stuffing!” Either way, teamwork gets the win.
Sheri: I enjoy that everybody brings something to the table - literally. The contributions of homemade green bean casserole, macaroni and cheese, deviled eggs and sweet potato casserole and stuffing are all part of the bigger story of the day. We appreciate the tasty and bountiful array before our eyes as we all show up with something. We eat heartily and then discover there seems to be as much left over as we did when we started.
So this week, as you sit at the table, or on the couch, or maybe in the long line at the grocery store, remember: Thanksgiving isn’t just a holiday. It’s a chance to make harmony out of the noise of everyday life. And the music we make when we choose gratitude? That’s the kind of song that sticks with you.
