Songs have a way of finding us when we need them most. A few simple words can carry an entire lifetime of love, loss, hope, and longing. When lyrics tell a story, they entertain us and invite us in.

That invitation isn’t accidental. Storytelling in songwriting is a skill, shaped by choosing meaningful details, weaving a relatable story, and leaving space for the listener to step into it.

Sheri: Songs are like tiny novels, poems, and sometimes even whispered prayers set to music. When I write a song, I am trying to craft a story with my lyrics  that is both heartfelt and relatable. Sometimes the story hooks you even before the melody does.

In “Wanderin’ Kind” I tell the story of a young woman almost grown up, as she searches for love and her direction in life.  It’s a “mostly” true story – places changed but the story is true with a story twist that really happened at the end.

Knew a boy down in Memphis, who thought the world of me.

Seemed to me that we would settle down and raise a family.

I was only nineteen, and he was twenty-two.

He almost had me thinking this is what we’d do, and then he said to me:

Honey I’m the wanderin’ kind, I move from town to town.

Something’s always calling me, I just can’t settle down.

You’ve been a perfect angel, wish that I could stay.

Even as I tell you this, I know it’s now my way,

I’m the Wanderin’ Kind, the Wanderin’ Kind!

I wanted the listener to feel her hope first, so when the truth arrives, it hits a little harder. For the actual twist, you will need to check out the song. :)

In “Think I Could Fall” I tell the story of someone searching for love using online dating solutions…and in spite of lessons to the contrary, still hopeful that the person on the other end has portrayed themselves honestly.

Dear LookinforLove@dating.com “hi” again.

Nice to meet, but first let me say

What surprised me the most

In your picture your hair wasn’t grey!

Still chasin’ love at this point in life, no matter how hard we try.

Start in one place, end up somewhere else, soon we are sayin’ “goodbye”

Humor and honesty live side by side here, because that’s how dating often feels - hopeful, awkward, and brave all at once.

In “Love Will Never Die” I tell our own story, how we met, married and our daily tradition that keeps our love solid and our eyes focused on what matters.

Met one night in early spring, when both their hearts were free,

From tangled webs of broken lies their eyes could finally see.

Stepped out on the dance floor, music calmed their minds.

Set his frame and held her close, felt their steps align.

Writing about real love means focusing on the ordinary moments - and the quiet rituals that last longer than the fireworks - check out the full song to see what ritual makes our love solid!

Bill: Storytelling in lyrics is a good way to create connections.  We see ourselves in the story, whether it’s about love, loss, hope, or joy. And a well -told story can make you laugh, cry, and dance all at the same time (extreme coordination required here!)  They can open your eyes to experiences outside your own bubble.

Great lyrics invite us to slow down, to pay attention, to remember that life is not just a list of tasks we’re checking off. Songs remind us that we’re part of a larger story, one that is still unfolding with every breath.

A simple line in a song can remind us of who we want to be, pull us back toward hope when we’ve drifted, give us courage to keep going, help us forgive, and help us appreciate the world around us . Sometimes we don’t even realize how much we need those words until we hear them.

Storytelling through lyrics is one of the simplest ways we can reconnect with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.

And maybe, just maybe, song lyrics help us remember that we’re all walking each other home, one song at a time.

So here they are, ready for your headphones, your heart, and maybe even your own memories to fill in the spaces between the notes.
