Full Circle Reflection..."Life is a Journey not a destination" (Ralph Waldo Emerson) Article and Original photography by Sheri & Bill
"Life is a journey, not a destination." Ralph Waldo Emerson (Original photography by Sheri & Bill)

“Life is a journey, not a destination.”  Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Ferris wheel was mesmerizing, as it turned gracefully on the pier at the Atlantic City Boardwalk. It carried people upward and downward, round and round, and offered new views with each rotation. But in this particularly quiet moment, the wheel was not turning, the water was still, and the entire scene doubled in its reflection in the water - full circle.

We often think of “coming full circle” as an ending, a return to where we began. But maybe we should take a step back and think of perspective…the same wheel, the same journey, only seen in reflection.

Sheri: Sometimes it’s not until we pause and reflect that we realize how far we’ve come. Things that I once thought about, wished for, or worried over -  some of those things are now just part of my everyday life. I didn’t notice when I was “rising” or “descending,” but now that I am standing still, I can see that the transition did occur.

Bill: I like the lifeboat - you don’t have to be moving to be part of the story. Sometimes you're the anchor. Sometimes you're the ride. Either way, you matter in the picture.

So today, take time to sit with your own reflections. Think about what has come full circle in your life - the prayers that became plans, the fears that faded, the strength that surprised you.

You may find that what once felt like a spinning ride is now a well-earned view.  And what a beautiful scene it is.

“We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”  T. S. Eliot

“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”Seneca the Younger (c. 4 BCE – 65 CE)

“What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.”  T. S. Eliot

Positive Reflections...

Sheri:  I found an old notebook recently. Flipping through the pages, I saw some goals I had scribbled down that once felt so far away. Now, a few years later, I am already living some of them. Often “full circle” events are just quiet checkmarks in the margins of our lives - proof that growth has been happening all along.

Bill: The other day I caught myself giving advice to a younger guy about “not rushing through life.” He nodded politely, but I could see in his eyes that he wasn’t listening. Suddenly I had a flashback to myself at his age, nodding politely while tuning out the “older guy” giving advice. Full circle. Now I am happily waiting for the next loop where someone calls me “wise.” I’ll frame it.

Music Corner…

As we focus this week on cycles, perspective, beginnings, endings, and the passage of time, our song choices range from introspective and poetic, to hopeful and nostalgic:

“Turn! Turn! Turn!” – The Byrds (1965)   Adapted from Ecclesiastes, this song is all about seasons of life - beginnings, endings, and everything in between.

“Both Sides Now” – Joni Mitchell (1969) This is such a beautiful and poetic reflection, on seeing life, love, and self from different angles over time. Note: this song helped launch Joni’s career as a performer, and it also became Judy Collin’s signature song.  We linked to Joni’s version.

“Landslide” – Fleetwood Mac (1975)  Beautifully reflective, this song addresses life transitions, change, and perspective.

What songs would you have selected?
