You’ve seen the look. That classic, head-cocked-to-the-side expression that says, “Excuse me?” or “Now what?” Animals do it when something puzzles or intrigues them. People do it when they are listening intently, or when something doesn't quite add up. And apparently, hawks do it too, with enough attitude to give a therapist pause.

This image of our feathered friend giving full-on curious side-eye reminds us that wisdom doesn’t always come with furrowed brows and solemn nods. Sometimes, it starts with curiosity. With staying open, asking questions, tilting our heads just enough to see something from another angle.

We live in a world that values answers right now and  preferably in 250 characters or less. But it may be wise to pause and literally take another look. Whether it's a conversation, a situation, or just a weird Tuesday, head-titling might be the very first step toward deeper understanding.

Sheri: I can’t tell you how many times I’ve caught myself mid-head-tilt lately—sometimes because I’m curious, sometimes confused, and occasionally just trying to figure out what the dog is doing. But that motion, subtle as it is, pulls me out of autopilot. It reminds me that wonder is still alive and well, even in the middle of ordinary.

Bill: That hawk has the same look I had yesterday when I opened the fridge and found my phone. Again. But seriously, tilting your head is a sign you are engaging. You are not just hearing, you are trying to understand. And in today’s world, that’s a form of wisdom we could use a whole lot more. I’ve heard that one of the first steps toward knowledge is confusion.

Sheri: This week, I found myself stopping mid-sentence during a conversation, not because I was lost, but because I was actually totally listening. I realized at least for me how rare it is to just absorb without working on forming a reply…a little personal insight.

Bill: I tilted my head the other day at a squirrel trying to carry half a bagel up a tree. It didn’t work out for him at first, but he kept trying, adjusting his grip, his angle, his route. I saw wisdom in his persistence, and I had a chuckle, too.

So, the next time you are confused, curious, or just catching someone being their wonderfully weird self, go ahead and tilt your head. You might find that wisdom was right there, waiting for you to look again.
