Holiday Musical Critters - Sheri & Bill

Every December, our home fills up with familiar faces - some wooden, some jolly, some battery-powered and dancing to the same tinny tune they’ve played for the last fifteen holiday seasons. They multiply!

Our Christmas characters include a proud brigade of nutcrackers standing shoulder to shoulder like they’re guarding the kingdom; a joyful village of Santas who never quite agree on what the “real” Santa looks like; and a choir of musical, animated animals who, against all odds, still burst into song when you flip their tiny plastic switches.

Most people would call it “decorating for the holidays.” But to us, it’s more like opening a time capsule. Every piece carries a memory - where we found it, who we were with, or what life felt like the year it joined the collection. Pulling them out isn’t just about getting festive; it’s about remembering who we are and how far we’ve come.

Traditions are little anchors that we drop into the waters of our lives that keep us steady when the year feels wild. They are the reminders that we belong somewhere and that we are part of a story bigger than the current holiday season. And they don’t need to be impressive; they just need to be yours.

Sheri: Every year, we unpack our growing gang of Santas whose beards have seen better days. I carefully arrange the nutcrackers in just the right order. It still surprises me how much happiness the musical animals spark every single time.

Bill: Repetition isn’t boring when it’s wrapped in love. It becomes a rhythm. A heartbeat. A familiar “welcome back” from the life you’re building, year after year.

Our newest tradition is having our youngest grandson and the four great grands – now known as Santa’s Helpers - decorate our small but well-loved tree. Best tradition ever!

Traditions are all about what they teach us: Joy is worth making room for, connection requires intention, memories can be built on small but growing things, and a holiday doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful. Because traditions, whether they’re grand or goofy, are just love in disguise.

So, here’s to holiday traditions. Here’s to the things we repeat on purpose. Here’s to the stories they tell and the love they keep alive.

And here’s to all the nutcrackers, Santas, singing animals and Santa’s Helpers who help us remember what really matters.

Merry Christmas!
