Every Valentine’s Day, we’re surrounded by messages about romantic love – perfect couples and dramatic declarations. But sometimes, sweet love has fur. It’s the pet who sits quietly beside you when you don’t feel like talking. Paws padding down the hallway when you get home.

Sheri: Like the dog who loses their mind when you walk through the door, even if you are only gone for five minutes. And the cat who chooses your lap every night.

Bill: If pets could hand out candy hearts, theirs would say “Always Here” or “You’re My Person.” And they’d mean it, every single time, with tail thumping against the couch. A familiar weight settling beside you at the end of a long day.

Then there’s friend love - the steady, lived-in kind.

No grand gestures – just consistency. That friend who checks in “just because.” That friend who can sit with you comfortably in silence and make the silence feel full with no awkwardness. Friend love is “Good to See You.” “Let’s Hang Out.” “Let’s Talk.”

Pet Love and Friend Love don’t come with roses or dinner reservations, but they are both loves that keeps us grounded and makes ordinary days feel safe. Shared routines.

That’s the nice thing about love - it doesn’t just fit neatly into one shape or one holiday. You find it in loyalty, in laughter, in care, in presence whether it’s from a partner, a friend or a pet.

So maybe this Valentine’s Day, let’s appreciate the sweet love we experience every day - even without the sugar.

Positive Reflections...

Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind.” — William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream

“The only way to have a friend is to be one.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Where there is love there is life.” — Mahatma Gandhi

Music Corner....

Love has always found its way into music, even when it isn’t dressed up as romance. Long before playlists and algorithms, songs captured the quieter bonds, the kind built on loyalty, routine, and companionship.

From a playful pop tune written for a beloved sheepdog, to a deeply personal country song honoring childhood devotion, to a tribute to a friend. These songs echo the same truth as those tiny candy hearts: love doesn’t need many words to be real.

“Martha My Dear” – The Beatles (1968) … People often forget about this song written in honor of Paul McCartney’s sheepdog. Bright, affectionate, and playful.

“Cracker Jack” – Dolly Parton (1974) … An intimate tribute to a beloved childhood dog, Dolly’s song honors the kind of love that teaches loyalty, comfort, and belonging long before we have words for it.

“You’ve Got a Friend” – James Taylor (1993 Squibnocket) … This well- known Carole King song, sung by James Taylor, is often overlooked in Valentine’s contexts. This version is pure, steady, non-romantic love and just rolls over you like a warm blanket. The message is basically “Always Here” in candy-heart form.

Thank you. It reminds me of years gone by. Paul was in Vietnam and this friend of his was going to a exchange, Paul ask him to get a Valentine for me but just put it in the envelope not signed address to me in Military mail at the base in Japan. He was told I would not know who it was from. Paul said she will know.Got to love Paul.
