If You Look the Right Way

Cameras in hand, we stood surrounded by a garden of rose bushes. It felt like we’d walked into a live painting where the fragrance was real, and the buzzing bees were (thankfully!) ignoring us. Beauty was all round us.

Sheri: From my smiling demeanor, you can see that I was much more conscious of the beautiful roses than the prickly thorns that were staging a secret rebellion on my ankles. I try to view life that way as well: focus on the bloom, not the thorns (but I’m pretty sure I did let out a yelp or two!)

Bill: FYI, my favorite rose in that picture is Sheri—she’s got a smile aimed right at this cameraman! 

What you choose to notice makes all the difference. Enter a garden grumbling about weeds and bugs, and you’ll probably leave with a scratch and a sour mood. But slow down, tilt your head, and you’ll catch sunlight dancing on petals, butterflies playing tag, and maybe even your own smile starting to form. Same world, better perspective.

Pro tip: If you squint at a traffic jam, it appears to be bumper-to-bumper metal “flowers” enjoying a group hug...wait - you can’t see it?

Perspective is powerful. Even the mundane can become magical when we shift our focus. A traffic jam becomes a metallic bouquet of red brake lights. A rainy day? Free hydration for the world’s plants and your favorite rain boots.

So, next time you find yourself rushing through your day, take a moment to look around. You might not be standing in a rose garden, but chances are, something nearby is blooming—maybe even within you. Shift your focus. Look again. Channel your inner rose: stand tall, wear sunscreen, and let the bees do their small talk.

Let your heart be the lens, your attitude the filter, and your eyes the grateful tourists. Because the world really is a garden…if you look the right way.
