In the Driver's Seat

Your hands are on the wheel, your foot is on the gas, and you have just enough confidence to think, “Road trip!” You’re officially in the driver’s seat - freedom in motion with authority to occasionally adjust the radio.

Sheri: Remember one of our first road trips together, Bill? Packed car, big smiles, and after two hours of driving, a bold declaration of “let’s take the shortcut!” Ten minutes later, we passed the same front porch – twice, as a matter of fact. Also, the same rocking chair, same puzzled cat. Good news is the more you move, the more you learn. In our case, we learned that shortcuts may come with a tour package.

Bill: And then there was the great ice cream “miss.” We were cruising with purpose, eyes on the prize, when a hand-painted sign promised “Homemade Ice Cream – Next Right.” Did we stop? Nope, not us: we stayed focused on driving down the road. Two hours later, guess what we were still talking about? Not the destination, but the frosty detour we didn’t take.

Of course, not every mile is sunshine and sundaes. One afternoon, the sky opened up like it had a personal grudge. Wipers flapping, road disappearing, and us gripping the wheel like it owed us money. We slowed down (way down) and instantly our tension eased. Turns out that this time the best way forward was with less MPH.

Along the way, we learned the basics: stay in your lane, signal your intentions, and try not to take every wrong turn personally. The passengers help, too—bringing snacks, laughter, and the occasional “Are you sure about this?” which usually means, “This is fun… but I’m keeping an eye on you.”

So, keep moving. Learn as you go. Laugh when you miss the exit and enjoy the view when you find a new one. Remember that the earth is round, and eventually you’ll get there. Every mile teaches something, and every lesson makes the next mile even more fun.
