“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” (Lao Tzu)

Bill: Don’t know about you, but if I’m going to walk a thousand miles, I’d better have a good reason! So, I think I’ve got it all figured out -- Places to see, people to do… I remember having a toy friction car where you rub it along the ground to get the wheels going before setting it down to shoot off. Question is, where did you point it when you set it down, and why did you build up its energy in the first place?

141,438 miles is an impressive number, and how many miles a person walks in a lifetime. This calculation is based on the 10,000 steps per day goal our doctors nudge us toward while we live until the average age of 77.5. Even if you cut that number half, you still get 70,718 miles. Amazing, right?  That’s a lot of thousand-mile journeys during one lifetime!

Some journeys seem effortless - like the baby learning to walk, hesitantly taking that first step.  Falling and bouncing back up until their stumble-walk turns into running…and then off to the races, through toddlerhood.  When we encourage them, love them, smile a lot, call their names and give them rewards, they find joyous energy and unrestricted desire! Things don’t change that much as we grow, do they?

Sheri: Other journeys are a bit more tedious – schooling comes to mind, at least for me. And yet when I arrived at graduation day twelve years later, there was an inner glow from that achievement that made the journey worthwhile.

“Even the greatest was once a beginner. Don’t be afraid to take that first step.”— Muhammad Ali

So, what about those journeys you still haven’t taken—those “wishful” journeys where you still haven’t taken that first step? Might be weight loss for a “better you”, a new career path, a better job…

They say when people are at the end of their lives, it’s not usually the things they did that they regret but the things they never did. So why not take that first step and add another 1,000-mile journey to your life?
