Genesis of a Song…
“Wanderin’ Kind” expresses that continual search for love amidst its complexities and unexpected twists and turns, often slipping away before your very eyes.
It doesn’t take us a lot of years to see that love is not a sure thing no matter how much we love someone, where we look for it, or how hard we look. Sometimes we find love…and then sometimes we have an “awakening” moment in life and surprise ourselves to see that we are just fine with where we are, whom we have become and what we want.
Sheri: I wrote this song in the fall of 2009, following my 30-year hiatus from songwriting. I bought a keyboard and guitar, dusted off my songwriting skills and started sorting through life experiences that might make for a good song. “Wanderin’ Kind” is one of the first 10 songs I wrote.
While “Wanderin” Kind” is not my personal life story, I remembered a friend who moved around and always seemed to be frustrated in her search for “Mr. Right” : think she had found him and then he would leave. Many years later, if in fact “Mr. Right” ever crossed her path, she didn’t tell me, but I do know that last few times I saw her, she was still single and very content with her world. So, I took the liberty in my song of telling the story ending how I envisioned it – he found her and she was no longer looking – already content just like she was.
I filed this new song along with the 9 others I wrote that same fall into a folder--I really wasn’t sure what I would do with them. Six months later I met my own “Mr. Right” Bill, and after a couple years we began our “Sheri & Bill” journey, honing our singing and performing skills. We kept singing, I kept writing and we began recording other original songs as I would write them.
In 2019, looking through that folder, I came across “Wanderin’ Kind” and quickly presented it to Bill to see what we, now as the “Sheri & Bill” duo, could do with it. Happy with our results, we recorded it as a single in January 2022, and also added it to our “Moments” album in the fall of 2022.
Our Jan 2022 “Wanderin’ Kind” song promotion on our Sheri & Bill YouTube channel bought in over 2,000 views, and 800 “Likes”. Success!
At The Studio – Our Recipe For Recording Success…
A good recording needs good ingredients!
Recorded, mixed and mastered by Rob Kuhlman of Root Cellar Music Studio, we started the process with our original song “Wanderin’ Kind”, and added in our Sheri & Bill weaving harmonies, supported by Rhythm Guitar from Bill and Keys from Sheri.

Then we added a double serving of driving beat and percussion from drummer/percussionist Jerry Fields.

We stirred in some great Bass playing from Michael Levine, and some masterful Electric Guitar from Rob Kuhlman.

Then we topped it off with an amazing pedal steel guitar performance by world renown Marty Rifkin.
We are pretty sure we created a Folk-Country experience you will love!

Lyrics
Knew a boy down in Memphis, who thought the world of me.
Seemed to me that we would settle down and raise a family.
I was only nineteen, and he was twenty-two.
He almost had me thinking this is what we’d do, and then he said to me:
Honey I’m the wanderin’ kind, I move from town to town.
Something’s always calling me, I just can’t settle down.
You’ve been a perfect angel, wish that I could stay.
Even as I tell you this, I know it’s now my way,
I’m the Wanderin’ Kind, the Wanderin’ Kind!
Found a guy up in Nashville when I was twenty-nine.
Told me that he loved me over candlelight and wine.
Figured then that we’d marry, he’d spend his life with me.
But something in his eyes told me to set him free and then he said to me
Honey I’m the wanderin’ kind, I move from town to town.
Something’s always calling me, I just can’t settle down.
You’ve been a perfect angel, wish that I could stay.
Even as I tell you this, I know it’s now my way,
I’m the Wanderin’ Kind, the Wanderin’ Kind!
Time slipped by for some years, I was always on the run.
Traveled down a lot of roads back then, so many things I’d done.
Met a man out in Denver who asked to marry me.
But time had changed me now, it wasn’t meant to be, so I said to him:
Honey I’m the wanderin’ kind, I move from town to town.
Something’s always calling me, I just can’t settle down.
You’ve been a perfect angel, wish that I could stay.
Even as I tell you this, I know it’s now my way,
I’m the Wanderin’ Kind, the Wanderin’ Kind!
