“Food for thought” isn’t just an expression, it’s a reminder that what we feed our minds matters just as much as what we feed our bodies. Life, in many ways, works like a refrigerator: fresh food in, healthy body out; positive thoughts in, happiness out.

Sheri: I know lots about healthy, nutritious food! (Tip from experience: never shop when you're hungry.) I’ve been reading labels, squeezing melons, and checking expiration dates since my twenties. I also love to take advantage of a good sale, but junk food at any price isn’t worth it when it comes to health.

Bill: Our thoughts deserve the same kind of attention. What we store in our minds today is often what we reach for tomorrow. Encouragement. Curiosity. Gratitude. Hope.

History is full of people whose positive thoughts served them well:

Champion boxer Muhammad Ali famously declared, “I am the greatest,” long before the world agreed. What sounded like bragging was also a powerful belief planted in his own mind that served him well.

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps often visualized his races long before stepping into the pool — each stroke, each turn, even touching the wall first.

Inventor Thomas Edison, after thousands of unsuccessful experiments with the light bulb, reframed each experience. Instead of failure, he chose to see them as thousands of ways that didn’t work, which to him meant he was getting closer to success (we’re glad he didn’t stop!).

And sometimes the most powerful food for thought is surprisingly simple: a moment of gratitude, a hopeful plan, a kind word we whisper to ourselves… here’s hoping you keep your refrigerator stocked with plenty of healthy mental snacks!
