Have a Way with Words

Words are tiny things with tremendous talent. They can soothe, spark, sell, soften, inspire, or - if we’re not careful - set off a four-alarm misunderstanding. No matter if you’re a gardener, astronaut, jazz pianist, or professional napper (hey, someone has to do it), having a way with words is one of the most underrated superpowers you can sharpen.
Sheri: I do love a good turn of phrase, and my favorite way to start off the day is with a game of scrabble. Bill has always told me that about 95% of your conversations happen within ourselves - that inner monologue, running like a 24-hour radio station, shapes your confidence, your choices, your mood, and how you show up at every moment that matters. So, if you want to speak well to the world, start by speaking well to yourself.
Bill: Yep, this is where positivity comes in. Not the fluffy, Pollyanna stuff, but the grounded, intentional practice of choosing words that help you rather than hurt you. “I can’t do this” instead could be “Hmm, let me try this another way.” “I messed up again” could be “Well, I learned another way not to invent the light bulb (said Thomas Edison.) Let’s take another approach”. A small shift in phrasing can create a big shift in illumination.
We’re not suggesting you break out ten-dollar vocabulary or start sounding like a walking greeting card. No need to “heretofore” your way through breakfast. What matters is choosing clearer, kinder, more uplifting language to help steer the direction of your day.
Great word-craft turns small talk into connection, conflict into understanding, and ordinary moments into meaningful ones. And when your self-talk is positive, your outer talk naturally follows suit. You become the person whose presence feels like a deep breath. The kind who can brighten a room before saying a word.
So, play with language. Practice intention. Listen to your inner narrator and hand them a better script. Because when your words shine with positivity and purpose, success and happiness don’t just increase, they echo.

Positive Reflections.....
“Words - so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them.” Nathaniel Hawthorne
“A single word even may be a spark of inextinguishable thought.” Percy Bysshe Shelley:
“Good words are worth much, and cost little.” George Herbert

Music Corner....
Music, like words, has a remarkable way of shaping thought and feeling. The right lyric can lift your mood, spark reflection, or remind you of the power a single phrase holds. Just as we practice choosing words carefully in conversation - or with our inner monologue - these songs celebrate the impact of language, the joy of expression, and the connections that words can create. Here are three tunes that capture that magic:
Words — Bee Gees (1968) … A meditation on how words carry emotion and can move hearts.
Word Up! — Cameo (1986) … Celebrates the energy and connection that a single word can create.
Say — John Mayer (2007) … Encourages speaking your truth, emphasizing the impact of choosing your words intentionally.
