“Always have a plan” is more than just good advice—it’s a daily mantra. Good news is, if Plan "A" doesn’t work, no need to panic. There are 25 more letters in the alphabet to keep you moving forward. The key is to have a plan in the first place. Without one, you're just hoping for the best—and hope, while lovely, isn’t exactly a strategy.
That’s why every January, we take time to reflect on the past year and map out new goals for the year ahead. Predictable? Maybe. But experience has taught us that a little preparation goes a long way.
Bill: While visiting Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, we came across this statuesque figure, seemingly lost in deep thought. Was he contemplating world peace? Strategizing his next big move? Or just plotting how to keep that pesky pigeon from landing on his head? We’ll never know—but I like to think he was working on his Plan.
Sheri: Once a plan is in place, I find lists incredibly satisfying. There’s nothing quite like crossing something off—it’s proof of progress! Science even backs this up: every time we complete a task, our brain releases dopamine, giving us that little rush of accomplishment.
And here’s some great news for all you procrastinators—just making a plan starts the dopamine flowing. So even if you’re not quite ready to take action, the simple act of planning gets you a step closer to success.
Whether you're mapping out the year ahead, setting small daily goals, or just figuring out how to keep pigeons at bay, one thing is clear: having a plan puts you in control. So go ahead, start plotting your next move—your future self will thank you.
